5 Ways to Soothe Coughs and Colds with Dr. Bilal Rather

Feeling under the weather with a cough or cold?

Dr. Bilal Rathe shares 5 helpful tips to ease our discomfort and get you back on our feet. These remedies can help to improve symptoms, which typically last one to two weeks.

When we have a cold or cough, we should try to make ourselves as comfortable as possible by

1. Consume a lot of liquids.

Drink plenty of water, juice, clear broth, or warm lemon water with honey to stay hydrated. Steer clear of alcohol and caffeine, which can more quickly and effectively dehydrate us.

2. Consume some chicken soup.

Warm liquids like tea or apple juice, as well as chicken soup, can help relieve congestion.

3. Take a nap

If we have a fever, a nasty cough, or feel sleepy after taking medication, we should stay at home instead of going to work or school. This will allow us to recover and lessen the likelihood that we may spread the infection to others.

Modify the humidity and temperature in room.
Don't let room get too hot. A cool-mist humidifier or vaporizer can help relieve coughing and congestion by adding moisture to dry air. Maintain the humidifier's cleanliness to stop mold and germs from growing.

4. Use nasal drops with saline

Try using saline nasal drops to clear up congestion in your nose. These drops, which we can purchase over-the-counter, can help alleviate symptoms in both newborns and children.

5. Gargle with Salt Water

Gargling with warm salt water can help to soothe a sore throat and reduce inflammation. To make a saltwater gargle, dissolve 1/4 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water. Gargle for 30 seconds several times a day.

By staying hydrated, getting ample rest, managing our environment, and using simple remedies like saline drops and warm liquids, we can effectively combat cough and cold symptoms. If symptoms worsen or persist beyond two weeks, it's essential to consult a Qualified Doctor.
